SOLAB is now formally over but many research lines opened during SOLAB are still underway.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"left\"} --><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">SOLAB&#8217;s general objective was to improve our ability to anticipate and manage coastal ocean evolutions. Its key premise was that adaptation, mitigation, restoration, and hazard prevention strategies have to be based on an in-depth integrated understanding of the present and past system states and their functioning. Specifically, the objectives of the SOLAB project were to characterize and understand the trophic functioning (from physics to fish) of the south-Senegalese upwelling system (SSUS), with a particular attention to plankton, which has a central role in marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The scientific approach we followed took inspiration from various ongoing and past research programs in various parts of the California current system (<a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/toc\/10.1002\/(ISSN)2169-9291.COAST1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/toc\/10.1002\/(ISSN)2169-9291.COAST1\">Oregon coast<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/deep-sea-research-part-ii-topical-studies-in-oceanography\/vol\/53\/issue\/25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/deep-sea-research-part-ii-topical-studies-in-oceanography\/vol\/53\/issue\/25\">Point Reyes\/Bodega Bay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tos.org\/oceanography\/assets\/docs\/18-2_ryan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/tos.org\/oceanography\/assets\/docs\/18-2_ryan.pdf\">Monterey Bay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/plankt\/issue\/34\/9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/plankt\/issue\/34\/9\">CCE-LTER A-Front Study<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/progress-in-oceanography\/vol\/117\/suppl\/C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/progress-in-oceanography\/vol\/117\/suppl\/C\">Irish Sea<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":996,\"sizeSlug\":\"full\",\"linkDestination\":\"media\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solab.locean.ipsl.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fig_main_page.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"988\" height=\"475\" class=\"wp-image-996\" src=\"https:\/\/solab.locean.ipsl.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fig_main_page.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solab.locean.ipsl.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fig_main_page.png 988w, https:\/\/solab.locean.ipsl.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fig_main_page-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/solab.locean.ipsl.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fig_main_page-768x369.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 988px) 100vw, 988px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figcaption><mark class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: #5e6468;\"><em>Sea surface temperature (SST) and Chlorophyl-a (Chla) over the senegalese coastal ocean on 5 January 2016, from satellite MODIS-AQUA. Preferential upwelling south of Dakar\/Cape Verde peninsula and transport of cold upwelling water southward form a blue tongue pattern in SST, surrounded by warmer reddish waters both inshore and offshore. Chla patterns reveal enrichment by upwelling inside the cold SST tongue. Near the coast, retention processes, recycling and perhaps terrigenous input concur to yield maximum plankton biomass. <\/em><\/mark><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Interactions exist with several <a href=\"\/projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"\/projects\/\">companion projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The work plan was decomposed into<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>observational activities, relying on both in situ measurements\/sampling and satellite imaging<\/li>\n<li>numerical modelling of the ocean physics (CROCO), biogeochemistry (PISCES) and planktonic biodiversity (DARWIN)<\/li>\n<li>Dissemination of SOLAB&#8217;s findings based on the production of science-to-policy and mediation material<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The SOLAB consortium was made of 50+ researchers, engineers, post-doc researchers, and students from 9 research institutes\/laboratories in France (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.locean-ipsl.upmc.fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.locean-ipsl.upmc.fr\">LOCEAN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umr-lops.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.umr-lops.fr\/\">LOPS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/lemar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/lemar\/\">LEMAR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwz.ifremer.fr\/dyneco_eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwz.ifremer.fr\/dyneco_eng\/\">IFREMER\/DYNECO<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legos.omp.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.legos.omp.eu\/en\">LEGOS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aero.obs-mip.fr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.aero.obs-mip.fr\/en\/\">LAERO<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ummisco.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ummisco.fr\/\">UMMISCO<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/umr-marbec.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/umr-marbec.fr\/\">MARBEC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/log.cnrs.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/log.cnrs.fr\/\">LOG<\/a>) and four in Senegal (LPAO-SF and IFAN @ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucad.sn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ucad.sn\/\">Universit\u00e9 Cheikh Anta Diop<\/a>; LOSEC @ <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universit%C3%A9_Assane-Seck_de_Ziguinchor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universit%C3%A9_Assane-Seck_de_Ziguinchor\">Universit\u00e9 Assane Seck de Ziguinchor<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/uam.sn\/universite-amadou-mahtar-mbow-de-dakar-uam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/uam.sn\/universite-amadou-mahtar-mbow-de-dakar-uam\">Universit\u00e9 Amadou Mahtar Mbow de Dakar<\/a>. Training of young scientists in Senegal and to a lesser extent in France has been a major outcome of the project (5 PhDs + two still underway as of 2025; 10 M2 student internships; 2 M1).<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>SOLAB&#8217;s research provides\u00a0 support and guidance to the state actors in charge of ecosystem monitoring, fisheries management, climate change impacts, marine pollution control.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Some actions were also aimed at reinforcing ties with traditional fishermen. Specifically, we have designed and conducted programs of daily field trip to collect a wide variety of essential variables over the Senegalese continental shelf using traditional fishing canoes.
